What Is Fip in Plumbing Fittings
Look at the threads. If you can see them inside the hole, like the grooves inside a donut, it’s female (FIP). If the threads are on the outside, like ridges on a screw, it’s male.
Another trick: hold a pencil next to the fitting. Can you slide the pencil into the hole? FIP. Does the fitting look like it could screw into a pencil sharpener? Probably MIP. This silly test works every time.
Why It’s Actually Kind of Fun
Plumbing is one of the few hobbies where you get to play with water and hardware without judgment. Once you know FIP, you see these connections everywhere – under sinks, behind toilets, in washing machines. It’s like a secret language written in brass and thread.
Next time you’re at a friend’s house and they complain about a drippy pipe, you can casually say, “Probably a worn-out FIP washer.” They’ll think you’re a plumbing prophet. You don’t have to correct them.
