Why Does the Clock Go Back
You might think it was Benjamin Franklin, because he was a genius with a kite and a key. Franklin did joke about adjusting clocks to save candles in 1784, but he was being sarcastic. He was basically the original Twitter troll.
The real credit (or blame) goes to a New Zealand entomologist named George Hudson. In 1895, he wanted more daylight after work to hunt bugs. I kid you not—he wanted an extra hour to collect insects.
Then came World War I. Germany adopted DST first in 1916 to save coal for the war effort. The UK, the US, and almost everyone else followed suit, because nothing says “patriotic” like changing your alarm clock to fight the enemy.
