How Is Rabies Transmitted
In the wild, rabies is carried by a “reservoir” of animals—creatures that keep the virus alive in their populations. In the US, those are usually raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats. In other parts of the world, it’s often street dogs (which is a huge problem in places with low vaccination rates).
Rabies Transmission
Seeing a raccoon stumbling around in broad daylight is a red flag. It’s not being cute—it’s likely suffering from late-stage rabies, which makes the brain swell and messes with coordination. They lose their natural fear of humans.
