Insects That Jump Like Fleas

Insects That Jump Like Fleasにまつわる興味深い視点を分かりやすく発信ます。

You knew this one was coming. Grasshoppers are basically living pogo sticks with wings. They can jump ten times their body length, and some species, like the pygmy grasshopper, can also glide after launch. Different from fleas: grasshoppers use a gear-like mechanism in their back legs—yes, actual biological gears—to synchronize their jumps. (Imagine having gears in your knees. Ouch.)

A fun fact that makes me chuckle: when a grasshopper jumps, it often wipes out sideways because its legs aren’t symmetrical. So they’re not just acrobats; they’re slightly clumsy acrobats. Relatable, right?
