What about a pancake? Or better yet, a slice of bread. If you cut a bread slice perfectly in half horizontally, you get two equal halves—top and bottom. That line is horizontal, like the X-axis.
Imagine a smiley face drawn on a piece of paper. If you fold the paper so the top of the smile hits the bottom of the frown, you’re using a horizontal axis. That’s the X-axis direction.
So when someone asks “Is axis of symmetry X or Y?”, they’re really asking: does the mirror line run left-right (horizontal like X) or up-down (vertical like Y)?
